Reviving Wooden Tales: Cheriyal Dolls of Telangana
PI: Dr Mohammad Shahid
Sponsoring Agency:
Aatamnirbhar Bharat Centre for Design – Aatman under Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, New Delhi.
CHERIYAL is an ancient craft form of making dolls and scrolls from Telangana state in India dating back to the pre-Kakatiya dynasty period. It is an integral part of local culture. Traditionally, NAKASH artisans are involved in crafting these dolls (a set of 56 dolls) used for narrating Katamaraju Katha. Nomadic storytellers use these dolls in performances across villages. Beyond storytelling, Cheriyal dolls hold cultural and religious significance, serving as ritual objects, toys, and decor items. This project aimed to document the traditional doll-making process while exploring contemporary product development.
